Applied Pragmatism and Interaction Design
نویسنده
چکیده
This chapter presents a translational approach to socio-technical design, as a new approach to the theorybased design of user interfaces, supported by a multi-stage process. A survey of the early work on theorybased design in HCI identifies the strengths and limitations of this approach. This new approach extends HCI with a socio-cultural perspective, and adopts creative practices from the fields of architecture and furniture design. The process consists of three stages: selection, appropriation, and translation that “map” elements from the socio-cultural domain to the HCI domain. Two interactive systems are used to illustrate the process, informed by ideas of American pragmatism. The chapter ends by discussing the strengths and limitations of the translational approach, and points out directions for further work. The “Copy Principle” accounts for the origin of all ideas.

متن کاملPragmatism, neo-pragmatism and sociocultural theory: Communicative participation as a perspective in LIS
Purpose – To show that the neo-pragmatist position of Richard Rorty, when combined with a sociocultural perspective, provides library and information science (LIS) with a forceful epistemological tool. Design/methodology/approach – Literature-based conceptual analysis of: historical development of pragmatism in relation to other epistemological positions; neo-pragmatism as a non-dualist, both p...
متن کاملFrom Pragmatism to Interaction Design: A Sociotechnical Design Space
This article presents an approach to interaction design that is inspired by sociotechnical systems (STS) and grounded in sociocultural theory. The focus is on the early phases of the design process and in particular how theoretical ideas can stimulate design. It starts by surveying key works in theory-based design in HCI and CSCW. The notion of ‘externalized design’ of buildings has been adopte...
متن کاملWhat Kind of Pragmatism in Information Systems Research?
This paper investigates what pragmatism can mean to information systems research. It makes a division into three types of pragmatism: Functional, referential and methodological pragmatism. These three kinds of pragmatisms are explained through their different knowledge – action relations. Functional pragmatism is described as “knowledge for action”. Referential pragmatism is described as “knowl...
متن کاملFive Answers on Pragmatism
Prof. Haack answers a series of questions on pragmatism, beginning with the origins of this tradition in the work of Peirce and James, its evolution in the work of Dewey and Mead, and its influence beyond the United States in, for example, the Italian pragmatists and the radical British pragmatist F. C. S. Schiller. Classical pragmatism, she observes, is a rich and varied tradition from which t...
